Why You Should Join an Aero Club

I recently joined a flight club, and it has already transformed my aviation journey in ways I never imagined. Flying used to feel like a far-off dream, but once I stepped into this community of passionate aviators, everything changed. The camaraderie, guidance, and resources I’ve found in an aero club make learning to fly not only more efficient but also infinitely more fun. If you’ve been curious about getting your pilot’s license or simply want to take your aviation passion to the next level, let me tell you why you should consider joining an aero club, especially Fly Compton Aero Club at KCPM (Compton/Woodley Airport).

What is an Aero Club?

An aero club (sometimes called a “flight club”) is a community of aviation enthusiasts—pilots, students, and even those simply curious about flight, who come together to share knowledge, resources, and a passion for all things aviation. Think of it as a flight school plus a social network. Many aero clubs offer aircraft rentals, training programs, and flight networking events at more affordable rates than you’d find as a solo renter or flight student.

Benefits of Joining an Aero Club

1. Community & Networking

One of the greatest assets you gain in an aero club is immediate access to a community of fellow pilots and aspiring aviators. This means you can easily connect with mentors, flight instructors, and even people who might become long-term flying buddies. Over the years, people have cultivated friendships that go far beyond aviation, all thanks to my aero club.

2. Shared Resources

Clubs often have aircraft at cheaper rental rates, making it easier to get in the air and start building your time. Fly Compton Aero Club, for instance, offers aircraft rentals at $155 per hour, and flight instruction is a modest $55 per hour. This can significantly cut down on the cost of getting your Private Pilot’s License (PPL), building hours for your Instrument Rating, working toward your Commercial Rating, or even pursuing CFI (Certified Flight Instructor) credentials.

3. Mentorship & Time Building

Aero clubs often pair new and seasoned pilots together. If you’re aiming for your Private Pilot’s License but don’t know where to start, you’ll have a network of people guiding you every step of the way. Even if you already have a license, the ongoing mentorship can help you progress to more advanced ratings. More importantly, you can quickly log the flight hours you need, thanks to flexible aircraft availability and supportive instructors. My CFIs, Mayceo and Youssef fit into that category.
